Jem and the Holograms Issue 1 from IDW

Today is the day! The Jem and the Holograms comic by IDW issue 1 written by Kelly Thompson with art by Sophie Campbell was released today! I’ve been excited about this comic since it was first announced. Jem is one of my favorite 80s cartoons. The comic did not disappoint. It was even better than the 80s cartoon.

This post will contain spoilers for the comic. You have been warned.

This issue of the comic follows the cartoon fairly closely, though with some changes. One of the changes is that it opens with Jerrica Benton and the Holograms already trying to shoot a music video, but Jerrica has stage freight, so she chokes, and runs off. We get a nice conversation between Jerrica and her sister Kimber. Kimber then gets into an argument with Aja. Jerrica goes home, and we get the introduction to Synergy, which is the part that’s very close to the original, though Synergy is in a hidden room of the house instead of a drive-in theatre, and is activated due to a lightning strike restoring power after a power loss. There is a nice Iron Man reference toward the end of the issue, and Jerrica comes up with the idea to use a hologram to hide who she is so that she can sing in public. Jerrica programs Synergy to turn her into Jem, and that’s where the issue ends.

At the end of the comic are 4 profile pages for the Holograms. It’s revealed that Shana is a Sci-fi movie fan!

The art by Sophie Campbell was amazing. When I first saw the cover, I was a skeptic about that art, but it has really grown on me, and I absolutely love it now. I want a poster of the main cover for my wall now.

The comic itself had a nice, heavy coverstock, and a holofoil logo on the cover. I got the subscription cover, though I have the box set containing all of the other general release covers coming next week.

I’m really excited to see where this comic will go. It’s already announced that Kimber and Stormer are lesbians, and will be a couple, which I’m happy about. It sounds like the Misfits aren’t going to be quite as murderous as they were in the original cartoon. I’m excited to see how Rio is handled in the comic, and how the “love triangle” will work. Will Rio be a complete jerk like in the original series, who cheats on Jerrica with who he believes is a different person in Jem? And will he have the anger and jealousy issues that the original Rio had? Will Jerrica be just as willing to cheat on him as she was in the cartoon? Will Eric Raymond show up? Will the Starlight Girls play a roll in the series? Will we see The Stingers? So much that could happen.
