Another ‘I’m back’ post, Mental Health Update, and Movie Thoughts: Arrival (2016)

I’m back again. I’ve been forgetting to post to my blog again. I’m going to set a daily reminder to blog on my phone to see if that helps. I’m sure this won’t be my last “I’m back” post, though.

A little update on my mental health: I’m doing better. I still have problems, but they are somewhat under control now. Finances still aren’t the best, but I have come up with a plan for paying my debt.

I was finally able to watch the movie Arrival (2016) today! The movie was based on the short story “Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, first published in the anthology Starlight 2 in 1998. It was directed by Denis Villeneuve. Arrival was an amazing movie. It involved a linguist trying to communicate with aliens. The movie included a really interesting view of time. Arrival was nominated for the 2017 Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form. It was the first good Science Fiction Drama I’ve seen for a long time.

Health update

I went to see my general practitioner yesterday for my annual blood work. Of course, they had trouble finding a good vein. They ended up taking the blood from a vein in my hand, and it was extremely painful. The tests also had some bad results!

My lipid panel showed that my triglycerides were up to 172 mg/dl from 157 last year. My HDL was down to 31 from 34 last year, which is still too low. My total cholesterol was down to 110 from 118. Again, too low.

My Comprehensive Metabolic Panel was good overall, but my Calcium was a bit too low. My Glucose was also a bit high, at 100 mg/dl. That’s at the bottom end of pre-diabetes. 😦

My blood pressure was also really high.

Being Broke Sucks!

I’m horrible about impulse buying control. If I want something, I usually order it. Because of this, I’ve accumulated a lot of credit card debt. And my credit cards are maxed out. Usually, I’ve been making payments, and then buying stuff on the cards again, keeping the cards maxed out.

I’m trying really hard to go on a spending freeze until February. The only things I’ll buy are essentials (groceries, meds, bills, pet expenses, etc.). I’ll still get the stuff I’ve already pre-ordered, but not ordering any new books, music, toys, DVDs/Blu-rays, comics, specialty foods, etc. This should allow me to pay a little on my credit cards.

I’ve currently got enough accounts that the payments are hard to keep up with. I’m only able to pay the minimum payments on most of the accounts. I’m able to pay a little extra on three of the six accounts. My rewards card I pay my cable internet, Amazon Prime, mobile phone, Hulu, and Evernote bills on, so I pay enough extra on top of the minimum to pay all of those bills. After the interest and the bills, I’m able to pay about $14 on that account. I’m paying $10 more than the minimum in November and $20 more than the minimum in December on my computer. I’m also paying $5 over the minimum on one my store card with my smallest balance.

I’m thinking if my spending freeze works out, I might do another one for the next 3 months. I’ll probably buy a few books between freezes, though. And catch up on my Transformers and Jem comics, if I can afford it.

I miss Livejournal.

I’m in one of my moods where I really miss blogging. I used to use Livejournal all of the time before I got Facebook and Twitter. Overall, I like WordPress a bit more than Livejournal, but I don’t really have any friends that use WordPress (or Livejournal nowadays).

Still, I need to try to get myself to write blog posts more often. I kind of stopped doing my reading goals when my PC died, and I had to write my posts on my phone. But now that I’ve got a PC again, I really could easily start blogging again.

I might just start doing my blog as a general blog/journal. Posting my thoughts. I might also start doing my reading goals again. I’ve been getting a lot more reading done lately. I started going to bed and reading at 8pm instead of 10pm. That gives me a lot more time to read. I’ve been reading 2-3 short stories a week, in addition to chapters from my main book and comics.

As for television, I’ve been watching The Flash, Supergirl, and Star Trek The Original Series. I’m all caught up on The Flash and Supergirl now. I also started watching Legends of Tomorrow. I’ve only watched the first episode so far, though. I watched the first 3 episodes of Luke Cage too. I need to get back to both shows. Maybe I should try to watch 1 hour of TV a day, minimum.

Reading Goals for the Week of 23 October 2016 (late)

I know it’s late, and I already got most of my reading done this week, but I figured I’d go ahead and do reading goals as well as an update on how they are going.

  • Finish Clarkesworld Issue 121 (October 2016)… DONE.
  • Read a chapter a day of The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu… I already failed to read a chapter yesterday, so this one is a fail. I’ve already read more than 7 chapters this week so far, though, so I’ve got an average of more than a chapter a day.
  • Finish reading volume one of the Don Rosa Library series of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics… DONE.

A Few Non-reading Goals

I’m switching things up a little with this post. I’m posting a couple non-reading goals. They are health/diet related.

First, I want to start drinking more water. I’ve talked about this a few times on Facebook and in person with friends. To accomplish this I sometimes put lemon juice or other juice in with the water. For lemon juice I put 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice in with 1/2 liter of water. I usually dilute grape juice at 3/4 c of grape juice to 1 1/2 c of water. I’m also trying to slowly get myself used to drinking just bottled water (I know, I’m a horrible person).

Second, I want to try to start slowing down my eating. I’m thinking to accomplish this I’m going to try not to do anything else (such as reading, watching tv, talking, etc) while I’m eating. I also want to stop eating in my room or at the computer. Maybe when I’m at home, either eat in the kitchen or in my recliner. And keep the phone put away when I eat.

Third, I want to get more consistent about recording my food in Myfitnesspal. This is fairly self-explanatory..

Last, I want to get more consistent about walking at least half an hour a day. I want to go for 3-6 10 minute walks throughout the day. Maybe eventually get to 6 15 minute walks a day.

Reading Goals for the week of 31 July, 2016

I apologize for the lack of reading goal posts for a while. I got lazy. Now that I have a laptop again (I got it a couple weeks ago), I’m going to try to start back up. I’ve been on a short story kick lately, and I’m trying to actually read my magazines that I subscribe to. I have two reading goals for this week.

  • Read this month’s issue of Clarkesworld magazine (issue 119)
  • Read My Little Pony: Frienship is Magic Volume 7 by Katie Cook and Andy Price (Comic from IDW Publishing)

If I finish those, I might start on the latest issue of Lightspeed magazine.
